I know. The clichés abound --
The world's round, the calm’s before
the storm. They grow malignant,
feasting on sudden deaths, old ties.
They flourish in symmetry, as children
balancing on seesaws aspiring for
that plateau, instances of evenness,
flatlines. Still

the crows are circling the field
and the scarecrow stands useless.
And, moving on, I realize that
horizons fluctuate because the sea
simply permits it. I was waving my
goodbye to someone, in a dream,
in a hospital. Her head

tilting like left-behind women
on the docks in films. Cruel gestures,
preventing voice. Far away now,
farther away. Until even how her
lips moved has become an aspect
of the sea. Collision

or silence. Heartbeats stroking
the evenings toward land. Spikes
protruding now over the belabored
absences. In that dream, I felt
happy. In that dream I sensed
presence. See, there lies reco-
very. See, there goes

drowning and this fear of depth.
What are the odds, whispers my
sister, finally summoning speech.
We are staring at grass, surveying
the earth, aware of how the sudden
wind is carrying our words somewhere
else far -- the sea,

a hospital. Because it is not
the ground shaking but
our bodies. Because this is not
a dream and the flowers are
wilted. And because the world
is, always been, and ultimately,
flat. Even in death.

Elegy

I wonder now why everyone is drawn
to sadness. I guess we all need that kind
of awareness, like this aching I feel
for the many hues of sunsets, the small
crack on my wall, couples whispering
to one another on benches in parks.

I put on a song and the verse just
devours my heart with such vivid distress
that I have to walk away, anciently young,
to my earliest memory: the sea, its stones,
the blue plume of a wave's crest. I guess
this makes for consolation, the horizon

insisting on how high things are, and
always that wide expanse of, of, well,
nothing. Maybe loneliness. The sounds
of the city tend to betray what I want
to say. Mufflers and what is droned
by untamed engines passing through

the poem's take on what's the word
again? I can barely hear it now,
that word, hiding in its own shadow
muttered under someone's sigh,
allowing the leaves to fall in their
usual, quiet way, toward their usual

quiet places. And we wake up to
the beautiful mess we've made
of our lives -- the constant sweeping,
this want for cleansing, this need
to rub my eyes, rise up, and just
give in.

Happy Mondays LX: Launch of L. Lacambra Ypil's First Book of Poems

Multi-awarded poet and Ateneo professor Lawrence Lacambra Ypil launches his first book of poems, The Highest Hiding Place, tomorrow, Monday, September 7, 2009 at Mag:net Katipunan as part of the 60th installment of the bi-weekly Happy Mondays Poetry Nights.

Collecting the poems that have won for Ypil the Carlos Palanca Awards and the Free Press Awards among others, The Highest Hiding Place charts the author’s more than ten years’ exploration of the intersections of desire, displacement, and voice.

Born and raised in Cebu, Ypil teaches literature and creative writing at the Ateneo de Manila University, while keeping a bi-monthly column in Sun Star Weekend, "Dog-ears in the Wrong Notebook".

The book launch on Monday begins with a book signing and cocktails at 6:30 pm, followed by a reading of poems from the collection from 7:30 pm onwards and bands and performers after.

Joining in the celebration of the book are contemporary Filipino writers and young poets from the Ateneo. The book launch forms part of the regular Happy Mondays poetry reading at Mag:net Katipunan.

Hosting the event is Daryll Delgado.

Mag:Net Cafe Katipunan will be hosting the launch of two new books from Milflores Publishing, Inc. on June 15, 2009. The books, Vlad Gonzales’s A-Side/B-Side and Carljoe Javier’s And the Geek Shall Inherit the Earth are the latest additions to Milflores’s line of humorous Creative Nonfiction.
Gonzales’s A-Side/B-Side is a collection of music-themed Creative Nonfiction evoking nostalgia, the joy of music, and fond memories of loved songs, while providing rollickingly funny stories. It’s the kind of collection that will have you laughing to yourself awkwardly in public places.
Javier’s And the Geek Shall Inherit the Earth chronicles the adventures, or misadventures, of a geek in the Philippines. There is beer and there are secrets

and we are not scared: real men

write poetry. I should have brought

a fucking pen. I should have brought my wits.

But neither pen nor wits can take away the crisp

taste of Pale Pilsen on a cool night

Now back to regular programming. I am

in the business of drinking, of real men

who need pens, who dream of realness--

the concrete, something graspable, like bottles

and paper, like this. What I mean to say is

I am struggling with the concept in reverse.

Wars are turning into children. Trace the warm

return to the womb. To the atom.

Then back to the wet cunt of motherhood

who said the owl is a beer, gray.

Anybody thinking otherwise remembers not

the initial wince from that first swig, most likely

in high school, and how most experimentations

lead to habit. I am smoking, drinking, recalling

what I shouldn't remember: kicking inside

my mother's womb and eager for life, breath,

beer and a birthday. Then more birthdays.

The celebrated windows flamed with light

directly pouring north across the Seine;

we rustled into place. Then violins

vaunting Vivaldi's strident strength, then Brahms,

seemed to suck with their passionate sweetness,

bit by bit, the vigor from the red,

the blazing blue, so that the listening eye

saw suddenly the thick black lines, in shapes

of shield and cross and strut and brace, that held

the holy glowing fantasy together.

The music surged; the glow became a milk,

a whisper to the eye, a glimmer ebbed

until our beating hearts, our violins

were cased in thin but solid sheets of lead.

Summer Storm
We stood on the rented patio
While the party went on inside.
You knew the groom from college.
I was a friend of the bride.
We hugged the brownstone wall behind us
To keep our dress clothes dry
And watched the sudden summer storm
Floodlit against the sky.
The rain was like a waterfall
Of brilliant beaded light,
Cool and silent as the stars
The storm hid from the night.
To my surprise, you took my arm–
A gesture you didn't explain–
And we spoke in whispers, as if we two
Might imitate the rain.
Then suddenly the storm receded
As swiftly as it came.
The doors behind us opened up.
The hostess called your name.
I watched you merge into the group,
Aloof and yet polite.
We didn't speak another word
Except to say goodnight.
Why does that evening's memory
Return with this night's storm–
A party twenty years ago,
Its disappointments warm?
There are so many might have beens,

Gioia's poem above was mentioned as a good beginning place to start getting students interested in poetry. this was taken from an essay titled "Why Students Don't Like Poetry" by Mark Bauerlein. Here are some of his interesting thoughts on this matter:

"More and more, they groan when it comes to poetry days...They like the fiction — standards such as “A & P,” “Lost in the Funhouse,” “Good Country People” — but lines such as these by John Ashbery leave them cold:

“. . . The sky calls To the deaf earth. The proverbial disarray Of morning corrects itself as you stand up. You are wearing a text.”

What’s a “proverbial disarray?” they wonder. And how can you wear a text? Yeah, yeah, we can interpret all kinds of ways, but it doesn’t seem right when you have to work so hard to get a grip on the basic meaning."

"And what does this opening from Levertov mean to them?

“Who’d believe me if
I said, ‘They took and

split me open from
scalp to crotch, and

still I’m alive, and
walk around pleased with

the sun and all
the world’s bounty.’ Honesty

isn’t so simple:
a simple honesty is

nothing but a lie.”

What the heck do you mean when you say that simple honesty is a lie? asks the young man or woman who wants clarity and straightforwardness from adults.

Or this from Anne Sexton:

“My friend, my friend, I was born
doing reference work in sin, and born
confessing it. This is what poems are:
with mercy
for the greedy,
they are the tongue’s wrangle,
the world’s pottage, the rat’s star.”

When 19-year-olds they read those lines, they think, “Huh?” Or, “Rat’s star?” Plus, when poets write poems about poetry and texts, teachers may find it intriguing, but kids who don’t plan to major in literature couldn’t care less. They can’t relate."

"The occasion was a lesson in poetry teaching. Don’t choose poems so difficult and remote from young students, especially the non-humanities majors. They may be brilliant and powerful, but if their brilliance and power requires too much guidance and contextualization on the teacher’s part, they won’t work.
And don’t assume that because a poem has regular cadences and rhyme, tells a recognizable story, and is accessible to the 19-year-old sensibility that it doesn’t achieve the brilliance and power of the difficult, oblique, intense poetry of the anthology pieces."

It's not happiness, but something else; waiting

for the light to change; a bakery.

It's a lake. It emerges from darkness into the next day surrounded by pines.

There's a couple.

It's a living room. The upholstery is yellow and the furniture is walnut.

They used to lie down on the carpet

between the sofa and the coffee table, after the guests had left.

The cups and saucers were still.

Their memories of everything that occurred took place

with the other's face as a backdrop and sometimes

the air was grainy like a movie about evening, and sometimes there was an ending

in the air that looked like a scene from a different beginning,

in which they are walking.

It took place alongside a scene in which one of them looks up at a brown rooftop

early in March. The ground hadn't softened.

One walked in front of the other breathing.

The other saw a small house as they passed and breathed. The

reflections in the windows

made them hear the sounds on the hill: a crow, a dog, and branches—

and they bent into the hour that started just then, like bending to

walk under branches.

Drunk Leaning into the Poem

There is so much potential here. A steady rain

spoiling the backdrop, a spinning cliché.

Nothing seems more perfect than the hours spent

deciphering the cruel forms, the sturdy structures.

Nothing feels more poetic. Nick Joaquin, gone.

Franz tripping on his way to the Writing Center.

NVM going postmodern. The dead rise up and reclaim

their spaces in the tradition.

Where are we, then, ensconced in the quiet evening,

safe from the rain? The critics lurk round the bend,

toasting the departure(d). And literature grows complex

like the gnarled branches of some local tree.

I dare say, what has the heart to say in all this?

Some higher power must charge the words,

lead the blind to occasional vision. I see you: I hear

the straining voices of the dead, the rain growing older

moment by moment, sprawled miserably now,

hugging the streets like some bum or national artist.

Get up, drink up. There is no end to this weather,

no end to this talk.

A fork of lightning

staggers the proud sunflowers.

Summer's relenting.

We dress the children
in our old clothing.
Tingnan mo, isang manok.
Hubad, pero dressed. Gets mo?
Naglalagas ng calamansi
seeds at flour from their crepe
paper wing tips.
Ang dami nating jokes
tungkol sa battered wives
and eating them raw.
Ang tagal mo ring ma-gets nun.
I can't blame you.
But the children look cute.
Sabi ni Boy Abunda
we should avoid eating buttered
anything. We'll get fat eating them
raw.
Pero ang problema sa'yo,
ang daming puwedeng pag-usapan,
pero mas gusto mong bumalik
sa mga natapos na. Look,
sabi ko, the children look cute.
We dress them in our old clothing.
Bakit gusto mo silang hubaran
gamit ang butter, and batter,
at 'yang Boy Abundang 'yan?
Oo, madaling maalala nung tayo
ang nagmukhang manok. Gusto ko
sanang mukhang linechon,
pero sabi mo, huwag,
hindi exciting.
Better not to leave
the skin on.
Mas nakakataba ang may balat.

Where she slipped, bled, her on to you

And before the end comes, the complete

corrosion of all things beautiful,

what calls us back to dust and the fine

delicate things under rocks, the solemn

quarters of the dead, or the believing

children who simply cannot resist

looking at the sun, curious about the circle

behind the wide glare presiding over

the world, the price of temporary blindness

that panics them and teaches us

to grow old wise to the benefits of light,

the harm of looking, trusting instead

the close and ephemeral, the feel

of objects, love; and the long view

of the old who are now straining

to look past all the nearby losses,

to the stars and their kind shapes,

now gradually being put out,

seemingly more distant, also perishable.

More Than A Feeling

Boston Celtics fan here. and i'm very wary of the way the team will wind up during the Playoffs (starts this Sunday local time) with KG sidelined and all. but i've a feeling Doc Rivers has something up his sleeve (a la Paul Pierce's "injury" during last year's NBA Finals). Glenn Davis is playing well, yeah, but i won't be surprised if Garnett suddenly shows up ready to play in the first few home games. or maybe even start during Game 2? really. just a feeling. or more. anyway, Lebron's no doubt the MVP this year and i know some literary pillar who'll be sleeping very late this post-season, whisky in/on hand. hehe.

blossoming on the body.
Did I just compare bruises
to flowers, in advance of metaphor?
This must be a poem, w/c is to say
lyricism is begged for.
To the beggars, lyrical bruisers,
I open my arms and say, Here, read
the marks of discontent. This body
is sentenced to make a statement.
